Law for the People
A new internet website
has been established where
Tonga
’s laws, amendments and regulations are available on a searchable database. The same database is also available
on CD now distributed free for those adjacent having difficulty accessing the internet. Hence, for the first time Tongans wanting
to learn about their legal rights and responsibilities will have quick access to
the law at no cost.
The establishment of the database was funded by NZAID
and initiated by the Tonga Government and the World Bank.
In July this year a Task Force was established to execute this
important initiative and thus improve the regulatory environment for private sector
development.
The website and the CD have been developed for everyone,
lawyers, business people, landowners and the ordinary people.
The primary aim is that people should know the law.
The Chairman of the Task Force, the Hon. Siosiua ‘Utoikamanu,
said that “the results achieved by the Task Force show how the public and the private
sectors can work together constructively to improve the environment for private
sector development. With this improved
access to the law, not only will Tongan businesses be able to use the law to their
advantage, but also international investors will be able to see
Tonga
’s clear commitment to providing a transparent legal framework for all businesses.”
The Attorney general and Minister of Justice, the Hon.
‘Alisi Taumoepeau, in officially opening the website said that “Tonga
has a strong commitment to promoting the rule of law and following due process. The establishment of this website and
the distribution of the CD’s containing the laws of
Tonga
marks a significant step in this process.”
